December 2007 Navasana (Boat Pose)/Core Strengthening

This month’s Pose of the Month features navasana, but is really about strengthening your center. Everything you do in yoga requires strength, stability, and control from the center out. This month’s Pose of the Month will be about awareness and usage of the deep and superficial muscles that run along the spine, along the sides of the body, and between the hips and the ribs. We will work on lengthening these areas and making them stronger in these extended ranges.

This in turn has benefits in every direction: better posture and more confidence; open heart center; a healthy, pain-free body, and, of course, a better yoga practice. The most difficult thing to do with yoga and everything else is to be patient and understand that everything worth doing is a long process.
