Natchez Trace Parkway

Well, we got hung up in Asheville for a few days with a broken fuel line on my 1985 Cabriolet.  Poor old girl, being dragged behind an RV is rough! She is all fixed up now.  We left Asheville on 12/23 and made it to the Natchez Trace Parkway.  It was beautiful.  It is part of the national park service.  Gorgeous rolling fields, forests and  no power lines.  We stopped along the way to take a walk.

Chatanooga TN

We stopped in Chatanooga for dinner.  Would you believe we found a vegan restaurant?  Sluggos North is a great little place with a bar, jukebox, board games and dinner style booths.  Here is what we had!  It occured to me later that my very first vegetarian cookbook was The Farm Cookbook.  The Farm is a vegan commune in Tennessee.  These guys have been making their own tofu, seitan and such since the early seventies.  This is also, I believe where Ina May Gaskin started doing homebirths.  Some of you may have read her books.  She is a midwife and big supporter of natural, non-medicalized birthing.

Tupelo Mississippi

Stopped in Tupelo for Crispy Creme Doughnuts (I know, I know, but we are in the south.  Sadly, they are not vegan so only the boys had crazy, cream-filled, fried deliciousness!), coffee, propane, water.  Walked the doggies up to the birthplace of Elvis Presley.  Tiny little one room house.  Got on the Natchez Trace.

Driving through the night

Steven has been an amazing captain.  I loves to drive and sometimes drives into the night.  I couldn’t believe, I posted his accidents early in the trip without more explanations.  We were cut off by a typical New Jersey driver at the toll booth.  I can say this because I am a New Jersey driver!  I was also shouting 3 different directions at once when he swung around the corner and clipped the guys taillight in Philly.  We are happy to say that we have had no other accidents since then.  Steven you are awesome.

Austin Texas

Made it to Austin late Sunday night.  I believe there was snow dumping down at home as we got here.  If it makes you feel better, it is a chilly 50 degrees here! We are psyched to be here visiting with Steven’s childhood friend Uncle Matty, owner of MaineRoot organic rootbeer.  It is the best darn rootbeer ever.  They also make sasparilla, gingerbeer and other yummy flavors.  We are parked behind his house and will stay for a bit while we get our papers in order to cross the border.  We need to get the doggies inspected, health certificates, fix some stuff on the RV and also go to the consulate in town to get all the papers done.  We are happy to hang out for a few days before our next long drive to Brownsville Tx and crossing over the border.  Stay tuned!  peace, Mimi, Steven, Dylan, Deven, Mate’ and Shanti.  Ommmmm Shanti
