Mid-November Teacher Feature: Jemila Kester

Teaching at O2 Since: 2015 Jemila’s Thoughts on Eka Pada Raja Kapotasana: “One time at my old studio in NYC I tried to keep up with the lady next to me, and we got pretty deep in the weeds on this pose, and I felt a snap-pop-pinch in my low back (which is bad) and realized I was letting my ego guide me, so I backed out. From child’s pose, I peeked over to see what other amazing feats this woman could perform. And that’s when I saw the lady was Trinity from The Matrix. Yes, that Trinity, from that Matrix. The one with...

Happy 5th Birthday, O2 Yoga Cambridge

“You all know that I have a passion for yoga. I love what I do and truly believe that I am part of a growing energetic movement to make people (including myself) calmer, more peaceful, happier, and healthier. My passion for yoga doesn’t stop when I step off my mat or out from the front of a class. Instead, yoga spills into everything in my life including what I eat and feed to family and friends, what I buy, and how I spend my time. For months now, I have been staying open to the possibility of finding a way to integrate many of...

November Teacher Feature: Kate Brigham

Teaching at O2 Since: 2012 Kate’s Thoughts on Eka Pada Raja Kapotasana: “Love love love Eka Pada Raja Kapotasana.  I’m a huge sucker for backbends and heart openers, and when combined with some hip flexor and shoulder opening, I’m in heaven.  It’s such a perfect pose for this time of year when the weather starts to change and things get hectic — we get a little stressed out and tend to subconsciously hunch and turn inward.  This pose helps shift the energy to a more uplifted and external place.”...

Mid-October Teacher Feature: Melissa Aucoin

Teaching at O2 Since: 2015 Melissa’s Thoughts on Bird of Paradise: “In Sanskrit, the pose is called Svarga Dvijasana. Dvija means ‘twice born’ and Svarga means ‘paradise.’ The pose is designed to emulate the shape of the tropical flower Bird of Paradise, fostering a sense of renewal within the body. It’s beautiful to watch a student come into the full expression of this pose. So much is required: stability, focus, balance, flexibility, and strength. Personally, I have to modify as tight shoulders and...

Pro-Tips for Your First-Ever Yoga Class Starting out a yoga practice is an exciting and perhaps even somewhat daunting experience. We are frequently asked for advice about how to approach a first-ever yoga experience at our studios, so beyond, “Go to Basics,” here are a few pro-tips to get you started on your yoga journey… 1. Let the teacher know that you’re new. He or she might be able to give you some advice about what to expect in that day’s practice. 2. Set up your mat in the middle of the room. Our teachers don’t practice...

October Teacher Feature: Erika Guckenberger

Teaching at O2 Since: 2012 Erika’s Thoughts on Bird of Paradise: “Bird of Paradise is a challenging pose for my body. My hips and shoulders are on the tighter side, so I need a lot of preparatory poses in order to safely get into it. Of course, because it’s hard, it’s exactly the sort of pose I need to incorporate into my practice. Working towards challenging poses helps to push us beyond our comfort zones and make us into better yogis! But at the same time, I understand what needs to be done in terms of sequencing to help...
